Join us February 25, 2012 for our first annual Venetian-themed masquerade ball, with a Greek twist. The Greek America Foundation is proud to start a new tradition in Chicago, mixing the best of the traditional Apokries (Greek Mardi Gras) celebration with the sophistication of old-world Venice.
In Greece, and the rest of the Orthodox world, Apokries is a festival of fun and masquerade for young and old that is celebrated during the three-week period before Lent begins. Celebrations in Patras are amongst the largest in Europe. In certain villages in the Greek countryside, celebrations are also reminiscent of pre-Christian festivities when it was believed that the god Dionysus wreaked havoc and ordered all to revel in fun and joy.
The annual Carnival of Venice is a massive festival that attracts 30,000 people annually and celebrates expression and creativity throughout Italy's complex social structure as citizens — regardless of gender, class or status — participate in the revelry.
Join us in Chicago on February 25, 2012 as we combine these two exciting traditions for a fun-filled night of music, magic and dancing... the way only the Greek America Foundation can create.
