Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship

The Greek America Foundation is proud to announce that the first Nicholas Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship for a semester of study abroad in Greece will be offered this fall semester. Thanks to the generosity of Nicholas and Jeanne Tsakalos, and with support from the members of the Baltimore-Washington Greek American community, this scholarship endowment will enable one student per year to have a life-changing experience studying abroad in Greece. The Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship honors H&S Bakery, Inc. co-owner and philanthropist Nicholas Tsakalos and his life of generosity and service to the Greek-American community.

Greek heritage is not a requirement for winning the scholarship. The Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship is open to college students who were raised in the Baltimore-Washington-Virginia area or who are studying for a four-year college degree at one of the area’s institutions of higher learning. The Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship winner will attend a full semester at DEREE - The American College of Greece in Athens during the 2012 fall semester. Each scholarship from the Greek America Foundation includes full tuition for a semester, valued at $5700. Ideal candidates are independent-minded students who wish to immerse themselves into the heart of an ancient capital city at an educational institution comprised of over 3,000 Greek and international students and who have a demonstrated commitment to their community.

The purpose of the Hellenic Legacy Scholarship is to foster a love for Greece and Hellenism in students who are passionate about making a difference in the world around them. The scholarship aims to accomplish more than making a semester in Greece affordable; it is about how Greece and Hellenic heritage inspires the recipient to transform his or her community.

DEREE - The American College of Greece is the oldest and largest American-sponsored higher education institution in Europe. DEREE provides students with the best of a U.S. education that is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). With over 1,000 courses annually, students can select from a wide range of disciplines such as history, the arts, literature, languages, humanities, business and others for their semester-long course of study.

The Greek America Foundation is dedicated to the promotion, preservation and perpetuation of Greek culture, history, heritage and ideals in contemporary America. Although currently raising money for an endowment with an ultimate goal to send between 50 and 60 students to Greece annually, the Foundation will award scholarships concurrently while building the endowment fund. The Nicholas Tsakalos Endowed Scholarship is an important first step towards building our endowment.

The Hellenic Legacy Fund is one of the signature projects of the Greek America Foundation, whose mission is to provide transformative experiences for students in Greece.
